The sculptures of the academic sculptor Samson Ogiamien from Nigeria are strongly influenced by the traditions and the culture of Benin Kingdom in Edo-State Nigeria. Benin Kingdom is known for its bronze sculptures, especially the commemorative heads of the Obas/Kings. Due to his childhood in Benin Kingdom Samson Ogiamien was surrounded as well as influenced by the bronze sculptures in his Grandfather’s palace. The coral beads that can be found on some of his sculptures remind us of the tradition and culture of Benin Kingdom. Samson Ogiamien: “Not only the material but also the size of the sculpture plays a vital role. I believe that the beauty of each sculpture lies in its size; the taller the more I am impressed by its beauty. Furthermore a huge sculpture is more visible in the eye of the beholder and thus seems more imposing and even more impressive. Most of my former works in Nigeria were more than life-size and very mighty, thus overwhelming.” Samson Ogiamien is constantly pursuing the realization of his dream to have a lasting and positive influence through the creation of large scale projects all over the world.
